New Delhi, July 3: Texinfortech-99, a seminar-cum-exhibition, was inaugurated on Saturday by textiles secretary Shyamal Ghosh. The exhibition had 250 delegates from industry, textile research associations and other technical institutes. More than 20 companies making computer hardware and software participated in the exhibition where they demonstrated the various packages they have developed specifically for the textile industry. The one-day event is part of the series of seminar-cum-exhibitions the ministry has planned to organise all over the country in close association with industry. The initiative has the objective of increasing the use of information technology in the textile industry. The industry at present is facing a major problem of outdated technology and obsolete machinery.
This renders Indian textile products uncompetitive in the international market. The ministry is facilitator trying to bring about a convergence of the two sectors, Ghosh said.
Another issue to contend with is themulti-fibre agreement (MFA). The textile secretary pointed out that the sector has to contend with the post-MFA bug, akin to the Y2K bug.
