New Delhi, July 3: Jet Airways will offer one free ticket to passengers tavelling to seven cities and two free tickets to passengers travelling to 10 cities on its network from July 5 to September 30, 1999. The scheme comes soon after the airline announced a new promotional fare of Rs 3,800 on the Delhi-Mumbai sector. The moves by Jet Airways suggest that the airline has joined in earnest the cut-throat market war launched by domestic airlines to woo passengers by offering fare discounts and freebies.
Jet has matched the "lowest-ever" fare of Rs 3,800 on the Delhi-Mumbai route announced last week by the largest domestic carrier Indian Airlines. Sahara Airlines, which triggered the fare war, now sports the highest fare of Rs 4,111 on the Delhi-Mumbai route.
Jet, Indian Airlines and Sahara fly 21 frequencies on this route. Though experts have said that overcapacity on the route is leading to fare slashing, the airlines mantain that they have experienced good passenger load factors on this sector. SaharaAirlines plans to add another frequency on this route.
The new Jet Airways scheme emulates Indian Airline's offer of free tickets to its frequent flyers. Sahara Airlines has offered consumer durables such as televisions, cameras, and camcorders to its frequent flyers.
Jet Airways had pegged the fare between the capital nad Mumbai to Rs 4,111 last month. Indian Airlines offer is from July 1 to August 31.
