P Sreevalsan Menon
Mumbai, June 30: Communications major Motorola has entrusted its Bangalore centre with the development of software for its forthcoming mobile telephones. This software export centre will facilitate language and features development for phones to be launched in the South Asian region.Motorola launched its latest mobile phones recently in India while the global launch is still on the cards. According to director, Singapore Engineering Centre of Excellence, Tuan K Nguyen, the phones will be launched on platforms like global system of mobile communication (GSM), code division multiple access (CDMA) and time division multiple access (TDMA). The unit is also actively working towards providing wireless internet mailing and surfing equipment.

Motorola has set up another development centre at Hyderabad and a semiconductor products division at its design centre at Gurgaon. The Bangalore centre was the first Indian centre to achieve the US-based Software Engineering Institute's Level 5 certification, the highestquality level for any development unit.

Motorola is also planning to provide technical training in digital cellular and wireless in local loop systems for its staff working in these technologies in West Asia, South Asia and other regions.

In India, the centres have developed software for pagers in Hindi, Gujarati and other languages besides technology upgrades like alpha and numeric pagers. Motorola supplies more than 50 per cent of India's cellular network equipment which includes both GSM mobile and CDMA wireless in local loop networks. Nguyen said the presence of local development and manufacturing has proved highly critical to the success of the company in India. Motorola has more than 80 GSM contracts in more than 40 countries.
