CALCUTTA, JUNE 27: Steady import of sugar continued for the second consecutive week at the two docks of Calcutta Port Trust (CPT).

According to CPT sources, three vessels carrying 38,538 tonnes of sugar berthed at Haldia dock during the period from June 18 to 24. Apart from that, two vessels carrying a total of 12,000 tonnes of sugar also arrived at Calcutta dock at the same time. Adanis, another vessel, according to sources, carrying 14,500 tonnes of sugar for Haldia dock has been waiting at the Sandheads, mouth of the river Hooghly, since June 20.

On the other hand, throughput of imported edible oil declined both at Calcutta and Haldia docks. CPT's figures shows that handling of edible oil at Haldia dock was nil during the period under review against 11,724 tonnes the previous week.

Sources pointed out that edible oil like RBD palmolein, soyabean oil, rapeseed oil etc are generally handled at the Budge Budge jetty of Calcutta dock. Import of RBD palmolein at Budge Budge was 5,000 tonnes during thisperiod, sources added.

Moreover, CPT sources pointed out, over 25,000 tonnes of edible oil, which is a record in a week, is expected at the Budge Budge jetty in the forthcoming week.

Land-locked Nepal imported 55 cars and 2,830 tonnes of steel items through Calcutta dock during this period. It might be remembered that Calcutta dock system is connected with Raxual ICD of Nepal by railway.

As many as four consignments of logs with a total of 18,809 cubic meter have arrived at Calcutta dock this time after a gap of two weeks. Logs are among the top listed commodities imported at CDS from Myanamar, Malaysia, Singapore etc.

The throughput of POL (products) at CDS was up to 16,500 tonnes compared to 14,175 tonnes the previous week. Out of this, superior kerosene oil accounted for 12,500 tonnes and motor spirit 3,000 tonnes.

However, at the Haldia oil jetty, throughput of POL (products) dipped to 75,579 tonnes from 95,500 tonnes previous week, of which 52,000 tonnes was high speed diesel. In containerhandling, the CPT's Calcutta dock handled over 2,650 TEUs of containers, of which 1,300 TEUs went to various ports. Last week, CDS smartly handled over 3,190 TEUs of containers, which was a record in a week this year.

On the coal front, handling of both thermal and coking coal declined at Haldia dock. According to CPT's figure, Haldia dock handled 45,000 tonnes of coking coal compared to 80,000 tonnes previous week and a single consignment of thermal coal went to Tuticorin port instead of three last week.

Throughput of crude at Haldia oil jetty further dipped to 30,500 tonnes from 56,000 tonnes and 80,000 tonnes in previous two weeks respectively. According to the Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) sources, crude throughput declined for the past two weeks owing to shut down of Haldia-Barauni pipe line. As a result, half loaded Suezmax tanker did not call at Saugor anchorage, 50 kilometers upstream from the Sandheads.
