Cadila to boost eucalyptus output via tissue culture

Our Bureau
MUMBAI, JUNE 27: The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) has transfered its tissue culture technology to Ahmedabad-based Cadila Pharmaceuticals ltd package for large scale production of eucalyptus, poplar and sugarcane and mass production technology of mycorrhiza, a biofertilizer and promote commercialisaton of plant tissue culture.

The technology has been developed by Tata Energy Research Institute (TERI) in a DBT-supported project at micropropogation techology park at New Delhi is meant for large-scale production of a number of important species of forestry, horticulture and ornamentals.

It would be used to develop high-quality products useful for farmers, agricultural and forest departments, an official release said here.

DBT has also transferred an eco-friendly technology for mass production of mycorrhiza, a bio-fertiliser that can supplement chemical fertilizers to the company. The biofertilizer is very important as it can be used with annuals and perennials including plantation crops and foresttrees.

The bio fertilizer is cost-effective and helps in the retention of soil fertility and increases the bioavailability of the nutrients to the plant. The production of mycorrhizal biofertiliser would start within three months at Ahmedabad and would be marketed within six months.

The initiative by an industry in the private sector to take-up large scale production of forest tree species is very encouraging.
