Put your CV online and you could be on the ramp

Suman Layak
Calcutta, June 22: If you are a wannabe supermodel, start surfing the Net. A Calcutta-based firm, Web Development Company, has cast its net far and wide in search of fresh faces.

At www.fashionindia.net fashion, model-aspirants can now create and submit their portfolios online and wait for a call from an agency. Even photographs to be put up at the website. And all this comes free.

There are separate forms for models, choreographers, designers and boutique owners that can be filled up online and a photograph can be emailed along with.

The company that has created the website is already receiving enquiries from agents about the portfolios that will be on display, said Priyanka Singh who is involved with the development of the website.

Started in the second week of June the site already has portfolios of half a dozen models, a few designers and boutique owners who have submitted their portfolios.

The site had been in existence since 1997, but about two months back the company decided to revamp thesite and promote it as a showcase of Indian ethnic designs, says Singh.

The decision followed setting up of various new sections on the site and linking up with 30 different international fashion sites.

LK Advani is leading as the best dressed politician in a fortnightly poll on the website and trailing behind him are Jaswant Singh, Farooq Abdullah, Madhav Rao Scindia and Renuka Chowdhury.

Singh says "In a global scale Indian fashion is not really well known. However we have an NRI population who are aware of the Indian designers. So we are trying to promote Indian designs through these people."

The website also features the works of prominent Indian designers. Information about the designers -- details like where their creations are retailed from and whether they are exporting their creations are available on the website. Photographs of entire collections of each designer are featured separately.

The website will also have loads of information on fashion schools and colleges, history of fashion, beauty, models and sections like how to become a model, says Singh.

A weekly quiz has also been started to test the visitors' knowledge of Indian fashion.

"We are also trying to promote an online fashion community by maintaining a mailing list of fashion professionals. Visitors can access the mailing list and communicate with each other," Singh said.

Prior to the revamp the site attracted 2000-2500 visitors every week. "We are expecting a gradual increase in the visitorship. In fact it is already increasing," Singh added.
