New Delhi, June 21: The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has welcomed the G-8 statement on Kargil saying it has gone as far as could be expected.Party general secretary KN Govindacharya told newspersons on Monday that the G-8 communique was a "fine success" of the Government's diplomatic initiative.
He said the G-8 nations had accepted the validity of the Line of Control (LoC) and recognised that it had been violated by Pakistan sending armed intruders across LoC.
They had also acknowledged that it was this armed intrusion that had led to heightened military tension in the area, he said.
Govindacharya said Nawaj Sharif's threat that Pakistan would open other fronts was a tacit admission that it was officially involved in Kargil. The Pakistani state was clearly working against the interests of people of Pakistan, he said.
" A failing state ends up committing harakiri and this is precisely what the Pakistani state is aiming for", Govindacharya said.
At the party's daily briefing, Govindacharya also madea mention of West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu's absence at Dhaka airport at Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's arrival and said it showed the "anti-democractic and uncivilised mindset of communist leadership".
Basu, he said, had repeatedly described BJP as "barbaric but his own behaviour, that too in a foreign land, leaves a lot to be desired."
Govindacharya recalled that the communists had refused to accept the BJP as the main opposition party in 1991 and that Basu was on record that he did not accept Vajpayee as his Prime Minister.
"All this just shows that they are yet to get used to the idea of popular opinion and the right of the people to decide in a democracy and are still stuck in the Stalinist era", he said.
Govindacharya hailed Prime Minister's visit to Bangladesh. Apart from inauguration of the Calcutta-Dhaka bus service, new bilateral arrangements had been entered into to further strengthen relations between the two countries, he said.
The Government had demonstrated thatnotwithstanding Kargil, India would continue to seek peace and cooperation in the sub-continent even while protecting the country's interests and territorial integrity and sovereignty, he said.
