Kuwait studies building new domestic refinery

Ashraf Fouad
Kuwait: Kuwait is studying the possibility of building a fourth domestic refinery to feed future power generation, a senior official said on Saturday."This is still in very preliminary stages. It would serve as a supplier for local power generation in the future," the senior official said.

"We are looking to see what would be needed for power generation in the future and what is the best way to meet those needs. One option is a new refinery," he added.

Earlier on Saturday, Kuwait National Petroleum Co's (KNPC) acting planning manager, Mohammad al-Saree'a, told the official Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) that KNPC was studying a plan for a fourth refinery.

"We are still looking if we would use gas or low sulphur fuel oil. We can't yet speak of capacity and cost because we are still studying the matter and have not yet reached the stage of decisions," the senior official said.
