France winter barley output seen down
REUTERS
Paris: French winter barley output this year is expected to fall 14.8 per cent to 6.73 million tonnes, the agriculture ministry said on Wednesday. In its first production estimate for winter crops, the ministry's statistics office SCEES also forecast a 17.3 per cent jump in winter rapeseed production to 4.35 million tonnes. SCEES attributed its lower winter barley production estimate to the fact that seedings were nine per cent lower than the level last year and that the average yield was expected to be 0.4 tonnes per hectare lower than last year. France's total grain area for the 1999 harvest was expected to fall 2.9 per cent to 8.96 million hectares from 9.23 million last year. The total oilseeds area was seen rising 6.9 per cent to 2.18 million hectares, SCEES said in a statement.Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
