New Delhi, June 16: Ircon International Ltd has won a mega international contract in Malaysia. The Rs 520-crore ($121-million) Malaysian railway contract involves construction of railway line on the 34-km Pelabuhan-Tanjung Pelepas section.According to an official press release, the public sector undertaking, under the ministry of railways, would also construct bridges and do signalisation work under the project. The entire work has to be completed in 30 months.The railway line would of strategic importance to Malaysia. A railway board official said it would provide rail link between mainland and a harbour being constructed by the Malaysian government close to Singapore.
The project would require high engineering expertise since the railway line has to be laid down in marshy area. Ircon has been taking up Malaysian contracts since 1988 with Rs 500-crore worth work already been completed. It has also taken up track work for rail link from South Port to West Port-Pulau Indah. At present, it is giving onlease 23 metre gauge diesel locomotives to the Malaysian Railways.
