Omani group sets up software centre in Chennai

Chennai, June 16: Oman-based Bahwan group has set up a new software development centre in Chennai with an investment of Rs 4 crore in a wholly-owned company Bahwan CyberTek Technologies Ltd.

According to Hind Bahwan, chairperson of the newly-established company, the Muscat-based Bahwan group is one of the largest business houses in West Asia with a turnover of $1 billion and interests in varied spheres representing worldclass companies like IBM, General Motors, Akai, Subaru, Hyundai, ABB etc for products and services.

Briefing media persons here on Wednesday, Bahwan said although the Bahwan group has been working in the information technology area for a long time and providing business solutions to business houses in West Asia, this was the first attempt by the group to source the high potential of software skills from Chennai.

She said Bahwan CyberTek is aiming at a turnover of $5 million in three years. The group has started operations of this new company simultaneously in Boston and Oman on Wednesdayitself.

Chief executive officer S Durgaprasad said the primary focus of the new company would be on e-commerce and web-enabling solutions. He said the group had already built a strong customer base with many multinationals providing quality software solutions in different areas including developing ERP solutions for mid-range and small business enterprises in the UAE and in other West Asian countries.

Other focus areas, according to Durgaprasad, would include travel industry solutions, business re-engineering solutions, projects and migration services. Petroleum Development of Oman, he disclosed, gave a 10 per cent hike in wages to all those from the Bahwan group who worked in migration of 3,000 desktops to other platforms and successfully implemented the project.The company has $1.5 million orders on hand from Oman and Germany and expects that nearly 60 per cent of its revenue to come from e-commerce business in the near future.
