TN to provide free computer education

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
Chennai, June 13: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi on Sunday announced free computer education in Tamil from grade nine onwards in most of the state's government schools. Speaking after releasing the internationally accepted Tamil keyboard standard and Tamil glyph encoding systems here, he said the project, which will initially cover 695 of the 1,000 government schools, would be introduced in the remaining institutions gradually.

He announced that all government departments in Tiruvarur district would be computerised in Tamil. He said VC Kulandaisamy, former dean of the Anna University, would head the Tamil Virtual University, whose establishment was envisaged at the international conference and seminar on Tamil information technology held in the city in February. A Tamil software development fund, as announced at the conference, would have a corpus fund of Rs 500 crore, he said. The government would look for another company if WorldTel failed to fulfil its agreement to set up internet centres withinthree months, he said.
