Daewoo eyes 30% market share in five years

Atul Prakash
New Delhi, June 13: Korean car giant Daewoo's Indian subsidiary Daewoo Motors India Ltd (DMIL) has claimed it will overtake the domestic auto leader Maruti Udyog Limited's number one position in the next five years.

DMIL, with a car market share of about 2.4 per cent against an overwhelming 75 per cent of MUL, is buoyant about its growth prospects and is willing to increase its investment from the current level of Rs 4,000 crore, a top company official said.

``We will acquire the top slot in the Indian car market in the next five years,'' DMIL managing director SG Swasthi told PTI in an interview while emphasising that DMIL, with 92 per cent equity of parent Korean company, was ``in India to stay and to expand its operations.''

Stating that the Indian car market was in for a major change in the near future both in terms of players and re-segmentation of vehicles in terms of small, medium and luxury cars, Awasthi said that DMIL would be offering a complete range of vehicles to Indian customers in everysegment.

``More than numbers, we would like to be number one in terms of quality and customer satisfaction. We will anyway have at least 25 to 30 per cent of market share in five years,'' he said.Outlining the company's future strategy, Awasthi claimed that DMIL had already become a major player in the country with about 55,000 of its vehicles on road and a fast increasing network in the country.

Its recent product `Matiz' would provide the engine of growth to DMIL, with support of its range of Cielo and Nexia vehicles in the mid-size car segment. DMIL was likely to supply about 45,000 vehicles in the domestic market apart from making an effort to execute most of its export orders of 10,000 units of Matiz during the current financial year for attaining a total turnover of Rs 1,500 crore, he said.

He said that DMIL would expand the network of 250 authorised dealers by adding another 100 authorised service centres shortly. ``We are planning a service centre/authorised dealer in every city and townshipwith a population of one lakh and more,'' he added.

On sales front, DMIL sold over 3,000 cars in May this year as compared to Maruti sales of 32,193 units in the same month of the current fiscal.
