Southwest monsoon proceeds at low pace

New Delhi: Southwest monsoon is likely to cover the rest areas of Bihar, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, rest of Karnataka, south central Maharashtra, Kokan and Goa. The monsoon has proceeded at a slow pace in the previous week.

By May 28, south west monsoon further advanced into central Arabian Sea, parts of south Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, rest of the Bay of Bengal, areas of northeastern states, West Bengal, Sikkim, Orissa and parts of Bihar Plateau.It advanced further into some more parts of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu on June 1. The northern limit of the monsoon passed through 15ø N/60ø E, Karwar, Bangalore, Chennai, Kalingapatnam, Jharsuguda, Ranch, Malda and Darjeeling by June 2.

Weather review: During the week ended June 2, rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, West Bengal, Sikkim, coastal Karnataka and Kerala and at many places in Orissa, Konkan, Goa, north interior Karnataka, Lakshadweep and Andaman &Nicobar Islands. Rain or thundershowers occurred at a few places in Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Bihar plateau, MP, Vidarbha, central Maharashtra, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, south interior Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. Isolated rain also occurred in the rest regions of the country except over Saurashtra and Kutch where weather was dry.

Scanty rainfall was experienced in Bihar plains, east UP, plains of west UP, hills of west UP, west Rajasthan, east Rajasthan, west MP and Marathawada. Deficient rainfall was experienced in Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Bihar plateau, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, east MP, Gujarat region, Daman, Dadra & Nagar Haveli, central Madhya Pradesh, Telengana, south interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep.

Assam, Meghalaya, sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim, Konkan, Goa, Vidarbha, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry received normal rainfall, while Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura,Gangetic West Bengal, Orissa, coastal Karnataka, north interior Karnataka and Kerala received excess rainfall during the week ended June 2.

On June 4 in north India, rain or thundershowers occurred at most places in Himachal Pradesh at many places in Punjab, at a few places in Jammu & Kashmir and at isolated places in Haryana, Rajasthan and west UP. Weather was dry in east UP.

During the period March 1 to May 31, the cumulative rainfall was normal to excess in 26 out of 35 meteorological sub-divisions of the country. All meteorological subdivisions received rains though there was scanty rainfall in the hills of west UP and deficient rainfall in the plains of west UP, Himachal Pradesh, J&K, east Rajasthan, west MP, east MP, central Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. There was excess rainfall in Orissa, west Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Kutch, Diu, Konkan, Goa, Marathawada, Telangana, Rayalaseema, coastal Karnataka, north interior Karnataka, south interior Karnataka, Kerala and Lakshadweep.

Weatherforecast: Rainfall activity is likely to increase along west coast and in Orissa, Bihar and east MP whereas normal rainfall is expected in the remaining areas where SW monsoon is likely to be covered.

In north India rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places in Himachal Pradesh and at isolated places in J&K, Punjab and in the hills of west UP. Duststorms with thundershowers are likely at isolated places in west Rajasthan. Weather will be mainly dry in the rest of the region of north India.

Temperatures: Day temperatures were below normal by 3øC to 5øC in Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, interior Karnataka during the first half of the week ended June 2. These were nearly normal elsewhere in the country except in some areas of the northwest India on May 27 and 28 where these temperatures were above normal by 2øC to 5øC. The highest day temperature of 45.7øC was recorded at Dholpur in Rajasthan on May 27.

On June 5, day temperatures fell markedly in Punjab, fell appreciably in Himachal Pradesh, fell inHaryana, Jammu and Kashmir, Rajasthan and in west UP and rose in east UP. They were largely below normal in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, west Rajasthan and in the hills of west UP, markedly below normal in J&K and east Rajasthan, appreciably below normal in the plains of west UP and the hills of west UP, markedly below normal.
