Chennai, June 3: The Delhi government has permitted auto major Ford India Ltd to resume registration of the petrol version of its Escort luxury car in the national capital region (NCR).Registration of all cars in NCR had come to a standstill in May last when the Supreme Court announced strict emission norms for all automobile makers.
The two Escort models, `Alpha' and `Sport-E' have been allowed registration in the NCR as both the models comply with the Euro emission norms, Ford said in a release here on Thursday.
The Escort diesel version also meets Euro-I emission norms and is currently under test for Euro-II compliance.
"Buyers of the Escort across the country can be at ease, since the car is compliant with Euro norms nine months in advance of the March 2000 deadline set by the Supreme Court," Ford India managing director Phil Spender said.
"We urge the government, automobile manufacturers and the petrolium industry to work together and ensure availability of good quality fuel for loweremissions."
"A policy also needs to be developed for inspection and maintenance of old vehicles that do not conform to the required environment norms," he added.
`Icon', the new midsize car from Ford for the country, would be Euro compliant at the time of launch later this year.
