It's an entertaining thought -- Shopping Mall No. 1

Suman Layak
Calcutta, June 2: In an innovative tack, `Number One', the upcoming shopping mall in Calcutta, has decided to become the first retail establishment to adopt ``excitement'' as its USP. Planning to open its doors in August this year, the Number One complex -- promoted by Real Value Projects -- has tied up with the Emami group for a Landmark leisure store on the third floor over 15,000 square feet.

This store and the terrace of the sprawling building will host events as soon as the mall is inaugurated. ``Things will be constantly happening here. Magic shows, performance by famous pop artists and celebrities will be used to attract people to the centre,'' says ML Agarwal.

``We want to keep the centre in news and we will be advertising massively. The terrace will be a food court with kiosks serving specialised cuisines from all over India and some selected places all over the world. It will be a favourite eating joint of the city,'' Agarwal says.

The first and second floors will be sold to individualretailers. Agarwal is keen on getting some of the best branded retailers to set up shop in the complex. He claims that Color Plus, Walt Disney Creations, Gaitonde Shoes, Hallmark, Archies and Icon are the some of the brands who have confirmedalready. The events and the food court on the terrace will be magnets to attract the crowds, says Agarwal. ``The terrace will have a giant screen where we will probably have MTV or some other music channel programmes continuously,'' Agarwal adds.

The mall lays claim to a list of firsts. According to Agarwal this is the first shopping complex in the eastern part of the country that is financed by HUDCO. The total investment going in for the project is around Rs 15 crore. It is also the first one to have an intelligent building management system brought in by Johnston Controls of USA.

The architects involved are Hafeez Contractor along with BH Rathi of Bangalore and Sanon Sen of Calcutta. The building is spread over a 21,000 square feet area and will have an atrium inthe middle with a glass roof top. Granite floors and a glass and granite facade will add to the ambience.

``We will start just before the pujas to cash in on the festive season buying and are planning to make this a `most happening' shopping utility in the city. Events are even being planned at the shop level where you can be entertained while you shop. With the cricket craze on we plan tohave some cricketers in for autographs too,'' Agarwal says.

In a retail environment that is increasingly getting aggressive, entertainment could be one sure way to ensure that shoppers stop by.
