Delhi allows registration of Euro-1 compliant Zen, Opel, Siena models

PTI
New Delhi, June 2: The Delhi Government on Wednesday permitted registration of six more Euro emission norms compliant car models of Maruti, General Motors and Fiat in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The transport department of the Delhi Government allowed unrestricted registration of MUL's Zen petrol VX and Maruti 800 (std) models, General Motors' Opel Astra GL, Opel Astra GL Auto and Opel Astra Club models and Fiat's Siena model in the NCR, special transport commissioner of the Delhi government MP Tyagi told PTI here.

The state government has already allowed Maruti to register its mid-size Esteem car model conforming to Euro-I emission norms in the Delhi region.

When contacted, Maruti chief general manager (marketing) Rohtash Mal said MUL has sought permission to register all the three variants of Maruti 800 and three variants of Zen models.

He said MUL has provided emission test results conducted by the Pune-based Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) in support of conformity withEuro-I emission norms.

The Supreme Court had orderd on April 29 to ban registration of all private cars not conforming to Euro-I norms from June 1 and vehicles sans Euro-II norms from April 1, 2000 in the NCR.

Maruti managing director RSSLN Bhaskarudu had announced after the MUL board meeting last week that the company would start delivery of Euro-I compliant cars from the first week of June.

He had also said that MUL would deliver Euro-II compliant vehicles by April 1, 2000, the deadline set by the apex court.

However, market leader Maruti which has about 75 per cent market share in the passenger car segment and sells around 8,000 vehicles per month in the Delhi region alone, has not applied for Omni vans and Gypsy models as the company is still working to make them Euro-I compliant.

Transport department of the Delhi Government has already permitted over 10 car manufacturers to register their Euro emission norms compliant vehicles in the NCR.

The manufacturers which have got the StateGovernment's nod include Daewoo, Hyundai, Telco, Honda Siel, Mercedes Benz, Hindustan Motors and Ford.

The State Government has given permission to register vehicles in the NCR for specific models for which companies had certified that their car models comply with Euro-I/Euro-II emission norms.

Maruti approached the state governemnt quite late as it was awaiting the test results of Automotive Research Association of India regarding the emission norms.
