Sun Microsystems, Delphi join hands

Sun Microsystems and Delphi Computech have announced a strategic alliance making Java technology training from the source now available at Delphi Computech's training center in Pune. Delphi Computech will start delivering Sun-authorised training programmes from the second week of June.

Baan appointment

Baan Company N.V. announced that Mary Coleman, current Baan president, will become CEO of the company effective Tuesday. Mary has also been nominated as chairman of the management board, subject to shareholder ratification at the company's annual shareholders meeting, scheduled for June 23 in the Netherlands. Tom Tinsley, current management board chairman and CEO, will purse new business opportunities outside Baan, and will continue to provide counsel and assistance to the company during the transition over the next two months

LTITL receives export award

L&T Information Technology (LTITL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Larsen and Toubro, has beenconferred the All India ESC Award for Excellence in Exports in the field of electronics and computer software for the years 1996-97 and 1997-98. The award was presented by Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee at a ceremony held recently at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.

Intel appointments

Intel Corporation on Tuesday announced that Jason Chen and John Breslin have been appointed as co-general managers of Intel Asia Pacific sales and marketing and vice-presidents of the Intel sales and marketing group. Chen has been with Intel for eight years and is the first general manager for APAC who comes from the region and represents the success of Intel's programme to encourage local people to step into senior management roles.

Chen was director, Asia-Pacific, for the Intel communications and distribution organisation in Singapore.

Deutsche Telekom invests in rising stars on New Market

Deutsche Telekom on Tuesday confirmed that it had bought stakes in a dozen or so German high-tech companies, thestars of the so-called "Neuer Markt" or New Market of growth stocks. Confirming a report to that effect in the daily newspaper Die Welt, a Deutsche Telekom spokesman said the group had started making the investments a year ago. The purchases were made in high growth sectors and telecoms-related industries.

Microsoft anti-trust trial resumes

The anti-trust trial against Microsoft resumed in Washington after a three-month recess, with the federal government and 19 US states charging the software behemoth of engaging in anti-competitive practices. Prosecutors say the company owned by billionaire Bill Gates pressured computer makers -- including computer hardware giants like IBM -- to install Microsoft products. The justice department has also charged that Microsoft bundled its Internet Explorer browser into its operating system Windows to harm Netscape, which makes a rival browser.

Cap Gemini, Cisco link Internet interests

Cap Gemini, a leading European computer services group, and Cisco, aUS provider of internet equipment, announced on Tuesday that they are to cooperate in supplying systems for managing networks and services for internet operators. The price of shares in Cap Gemini, which had fallen sharply initially, rallied to show a gain of 1.69 per cent to 144.4 euros. The head of Cap Gemini Telecom France, Jean Francois Leprince-Ringuet, said the agreement covered operation support systems.

E-trade to acquire US Internet bank

The online investment service E-Trade on Tuesday announced plans to acquire Telebanc Financial Corporation, the largest US internet bank, for $1.8 billion. An E-Trade said the merger was "expected to revolutionise the future of personal financial services by making available to millions of consumers a distinctive, powerful online financial management experience which will eliminate the need for multiple financial relationships." With Telebanc, E-Trade said it was acquiring the regulatory, management and operating expertise to enable both companies to fullyleverage their respective areas of expertise.
