Samsung targets Rs 500 cr turnover from IT products

Tina Edwin
New Delhi, June 1: Samsung Electronics Company on Tuesday joined the "flatter than the flattest" display device bandwagon with the launch of Dynaflat, the Korean company's flat screen variant, as part of an initiative to enhance its presence in the information technology business.

The Delhi branch of the South Korean conglomerate has also announced the launch of a host of other IT peripherals such as the thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD), laser beam printers, DVD drives and CD-RW drives.

"The introduction of the advanced 1999 line-up of IT product should enable us to achieve a sales turnover of Rs 500 crore from our IT business in India," Samsung Electronics Company, Indian operations managing director KS Kim said here at a press conference.

Samsung Electronics had generated Rs 315 crore in sales from information technology business last year. This year, the company is targeting almost 60 per cent growth.

Kim further stated the company has set an ambitious target to emerge as thelargest player in the information technology peripherals business with turnover of Rs 1,500 crore in year 2005.

Samsung's Dynaflat has a flat surface like monitors manufactured by its competitors -- Sony and LG Electronics. However, unlike the other two brands which offer flat internal surface, the Dynaflat picture tube has a concave curvature on the internal surface. The company claims its technology is superior to the flat display Trinitron of Sony and Flatron of LG Electronics as the Dynaflat technology offers "distortion free, razor sharp picture with extraordinary clarity and true lifelike colours". There is no visible curvature, viewed from any angle, the company executives added.

"The launch of Dynaflat technology in India represents our endeavour to bring Samsung's latest and most advanced technology products to India simultaneous with their launch worldwide," said Kim. Dynaflat was launched first in Germany, earlier this year.

The Dynaflat technology products are available in the SyncMasterseries of colour monitors, with 17 inch and 19 inch screen sizes. The Dynaflat series is targeted at CAD/CAM users and graphic package users. Samsung has taken premium price positioning for the product with the 15 inch Dynatron priced at Rs 30,000 and the 17 inch at Rs 50,000. In comparison, the competitive brands are priced between Rs 22,000 and Rs 27,000 for the 15 inch model.Samsung sells its IT products through two original equipment manufacturers, 600 dealers and 200 system integrators.
