SilkAir allowed to operate from airport in Kerala

R Sreekumar
Thiruvananthapuram, May 26: Singapore Airlines has obtained approval for its subsidiary SilkAir to operate flights from Thiruvananthapuram international airport. The airline had been denied permission by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) for operating flights from the same airport and the newly commissioned Cochin International Airport at Nedumbassery.

SilkAir has chosen Thiruvananthapuram as its first destination in India, significantly at a time when the national carrier Air India had lately cancelled as many as 18 flights from the airport. With the inaugural flight of SilkAir scheduled to take off on June 2, its holding company Singapore Airlines has managed to provide easy connections to over 90 destinations around the world from Thiruvananthapuram Airport, even as the government is yet to clear the proposal of Singapore Airlines to operate directly from Thiruvananthapuram.
