Blue Star scrolls up sales of packaged airconditioners

T M A Raman
Chennai, May 21: Encouraged by the good response of 40 per cent sales in four months for its newly launched packaged airconditioners with scroll compressors, Blue Star Limited, the largest central aiirconditioning company in the country, is pitching to raise sales by an additional 20 per cent to touch a total sales of 60 per cent in the next six months.

According to BSL executive vice-president for packaged airconditioning division TGS Babu, the 60 per cent sales will translate into a turnover of Rs 125-130 crore for year 1999-2000. Last year, turnover of this division was Rs 101 crore. Total sales turnover is projected at Rs 150 crore with some Rs 25 crore coming from service and maintenance contracts.

The scroll compressors belong to a new generation technology introduced some years ago by Copeland Corporation, a part of the Emerson Electric Corporation of the US and BSL imports these compressors for its packaged airconditioning systems.

Babu making a presentation to presspersons here on Fridaydisclosed that 30 per cent of the cost of the packaged airconditioning systems sold by BSL was accounted for by the imported scroll compressors. He said the scroll compressor is of revolutionary design leading to 10 per cent savings in energy costs for the life of the systems. It is supreior to the conventional reciprocating compressor using only three moving parts to the 15 parts in the conventional compressor and is eight times quieter than the conventional airconditioner.

Babu said the new scroll compressors fitted rengineered BSL packaged airconditioners are available in 5.5 tonne, 8.3 tonne, 11 tonne and 16.5 tonne capacities. The new generation airconditioners carry a price tag of Rs 26,000 to Rs 27,000 per tonne and are ideally suited to corporate and commercial establishments.

The company is currently claiming a market share of 34 per cent in packaged airconditioners. Total market size estimated at Rs 300 crore is growing at the rate of 15 per cent every year.

For BSL, the sourthern region islike a gold mine with most of the 34 per cent market share in packaged airconditioners accounted for by sales from the four southern states namely Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
