Volvo to launch Euro-II compliant trucks

Our Bureau
New Delhi, May 19: Volvo India Pvt Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of $28 billion Volvo Group, will launch Euro-II compliant 290 horse power (hp) trucks in India by end of 1999.

Volvo, which has already introduced four tractor-trailor models in the range of 260-420 hp categories in the country, is currently test marketing the new product, Volvo's managing director Ravi Uppal told newsmen here on Wednesday.

The 31.5 tonne four-axle truck would have a seven-litre capacity engine and be ideal for transport of goods such as coal, cement and raw materials, Uppal said.

Volvo is also considering manufacture of construction equipment at its Bangalore plant for which it is considering to set up a seperate assembly line, he said.

At present, the company is marketing Volvo Group's construction equipment in India.

Volvo has introduced FH-12 series of tractor-trailors in India which are available at a price between Rs 30 lakh and Rs 45 lakh. It has also launched a 260 hp tractor-trailor named `FL-7' which costsabout Rs 20 lakh, he said.

Uppal claimed that FH-12 and FL-7 series of Volvo trucks were also meeting Euro-II emission norms.

He further said that whenever Volvo introduces Euro-III norms compliant vehicles internationally, the product will come to India without any time lag.

In July 1998, the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) undertook emission tests of its FH-12 model and results were better than the limits accepted under the central motor vehicles rules in India, Uppal said.

Commenting on the Volvo engines, he claimed that the FH series engines were one of the most-fuel efficient engines in the world.

``The engine is equipped with electronic injectors, intercooler and turbocharger,'' he added.

Volvo has invested Rs 300 crore so far in its Bangalore plant, Uppal said, adding that investments were a continuous process for the company as it was infusing money as and when required.

Volvo is an international transport equipment group with worldwide marketing organisation andproduction in 30 countries.

Its products range comprises passenger cars, buses, trucks, construction equipment and drive systems for marine and industrial applications.
