Mumbai, May 18: Spices market at Navi Mumbai witnessed mixed but hectic activities in trading during the week ended May 14. Prices of most of the commodities remained steady while turmeric shot up. Black pepper lost heavily on slump in international demand.According to Rasik Mehta, a leading exporter of spices, the price of corainder lost heavily by Rs 50 per quintal. While prices of cumin and fennel did not make any mark as Unjha, major trading centre of both the commodities remained closed during the week due to 'concentration of planets'. Fenugreek staged a smart rally. Chillies continued upward march.
Turmeric: As arrivals at all producing centres in Andhra Pradesh declined, prices gained by Rs 100 per quintal. Traders believe that since season at Nizamabad is about to end, present prices are considered bottom-line. In Sangli, prices increased to Rs 2,700 (2,600) for spot and Rs 2500-2550 (Rs 2,500/2,600) for truckloads. In Mumbai FOL (Free On Lorry) prices for Nizamabad were Rs2,550-2,600 against the previous week's Rs 2,450-2,500, Rs 2,525-2,550 (2,500-2,550) for Cuddapah variety, Rs 2,600/2,650 (2,450-2,600) for Duggirala variety and Rs 2,800/2,900 (2,750/2,850) for the Sangli polished turmeric finger variety per quintal.
Corainder: Prices lost ground to the extent of Rs 50 per quintal on fresh bout of selling. Badami variety was in short supply, green were availble in plenty. Indore average ruled at Rs 1,200/1,250 (1,300/1,350) while Kanpur average at Rs 1,350/1,400 (1,400/1,450). Machine cleaned (M/C) and washed Kanpur at Rs 1,550/1700 (1,600-1,800) and M/C and washed Indore at Rs 1,350/1600 (1,425-1,700). The 100 per cent split M/C ruled easy at Rs 1,025/1,050 (1.040-1,050 ) per quintal.
Cumin: In Gujarat principal markets were closed on account of concentration of planets. Prices fluctuated narrowly. Arrivals at Unjha declined to about 5,000 bags a day. The one per cent M/C for Singapore/Dubai quality ruled at Rs 1,150-1,175, while for Europe it wassteady at around Rs 1,275-1300. The four per cent M/C ruled at Rs 1,125-1,135 (1,125/1,150) per 20 kilograms FOL Mumbai.
Fennel: Market in Unjha was closed due to reason stated above. Prices ruled steady. Dubai/Singapore quality was at Rs 850/875 and for London/Europe quality at Rs 925/975 (900/925) per 20 kgs at FOB Mumbai.
Fenugreek: Prices continued to rally and gained Rs 100 per quintal over last week's level. Export inquiries were good. Libya invited tender for supply of 500 tons.This aided bullish sentiments. The M/C best bold ruled at Rs 1,950/2,000(Rs 2,000/2,200), medium best machine cleaned at Rs 1775/1800 (1675-1700) and average at Rs 1,700/1,720 (1,600-1,625).
Dill seed: Prices ruled steady on firm note . The one per cent M/C ruled steady at Rs 4,150/4,200 (3,800/3,900) and 11 per cent FAQ slightly higher at Rs 3,750/3,800 (3,400/3,500). Old crop ruled steady at Rs 3,800/3,900 per quintal FOL Mumbai.
Ajwain: Prices continued to sky rocketm. Imported varietywas cheaper but the quality was inferior. Jamnagar ruled between Rs 5,800/6,300 (5,800/6,200) MP superior was higher at Rs 6,000/6,500 (5,800/6,000) and medium at higher at Rs 5,500/5,800 (5,500/ 5,600) per quintal FOL Mumbai.
Chillies: Hot season and scorching heat has adversely affected the working of markets and therefore Guntu and other Andhra Pradesh chilly producing centres are likely to be closed for a fortnight. Pakistan is active in import of chillies. Country crafts are in great demand as country craft are soon going off because the sea is expected to go rough. Chillies with stem ruled at Rs 2,950/3,100 (2,900/3,000) while chillies without stem ruled higher at Rs 4,350/4,500 (4,300/4,500) per quintal FOB Mumbai.
Tamarind: Market ruled steady and firm. Basket ruled at Rs 2,400/3,200 (Rs 2,300-3,200), slab at Rs 2,600-3,400 (2,500/3,400) while consumer packs ruled steady at Rs 2,800-3600.
Black pepper:A strong dollar and glints of outside competetion did bring some loweroffers. Demand has been slow, as buyers anticipating a weakning trend have kept purchases restricted to nearby positions. Cochin ready delivery, ungarbled loose ruled at Rs 173/174 (165) per kilogram. In futures section at Cochin May delivery ruled at Rs 179 (173) and June delivery at Rs 179 (Rs 173) per kg FOB Cochin. The MG-1 FOB Cochin ruled at Rs 186 (Rs 182) and FOL Mumbai ruled at Rs 182 (Rs 178) per kg.
Ginger: Prices edged up slightly. The NUGC good FOB Cochin ruled at Rs 82,000 (Rs 80,000) and FOL Mumbai at Rs 80,000 (Rs 80,000) per MT.
Sesameseeds: Prices were at firm levels as stocks are exhausting. The 98x2 jumped at Rs 3,700/3,750 (3,700/3,800 ), while 95x2 at Rs 3,400/3,450 (3,300/3,400). Hulled ruled at Rs 4,450/4,550 (4,500/4,600 ).
Peanuts: In Gujarat arrivals were on increase. Prices of 45/50 counts are Rs 2,650/2,770 (2,700-2,750 ), 50/60 counts at Rs 2,550/2,575 (2,600-2,650) and 60/70 counts at Rs 2,425/2,450 (2,400/2,450) and 70/80 counts at Rs 2,300/2,350and 80/90 counts at Rs 2,175/2,200 (2,200/2,250).
