NEW DELHI, May 17: A major restructuring of Zee News channel, till recently known as Zee India, is on the cards. Armed with a new name and logo, most of the programmes broadcast on Zee India including the `Diplomacy Show', `Agenda 2000', `Women', `Mystery Unfolds' and `Ek Aur Nazariya' have been dropped.Other programmes that are likely to be dropped include Rajeev Shukla's chat show `Rubaru'. In addition, the channel is also looking for a new anchor person for the popular `Aap Ki Adalat' show, presently anchored by Manoj Raghuvanshi.
The channel is currently in talks with popular TV artiste Priya Tendulkar for anchoring the `Aap Ki Adalat' show. Negotiations are at an advanced stage and are expected to close shortly, said top-level sources.
Both the shows currently have a 30-minute slot at 10.30 pm. The slot, christened "Investigative Window" includes other programmes like `Insight' and `Fact File' (broadcast on Saturday).
The logo of Zee Indiahas been replaced with a gold and white logo of Zee News. The new logo's colour scheme is likely to be changed in the future after detailed research into its impact.
Zee Networks is also in the process of setting up VSAT terminals at a number of locations including most state capitals in the country.
Journalists have already been placed at many locations, in order to give effective and more in-depth news coverage for the channel's viewers. The channel will also launch a full-fledged online newspaper on the internet in the near future. At present, internet surfers can view news at the Zee site, at Zee Network Online.
The network is also looking to outsource a new mix of programmes. The concept is to develop the Zee News channel into an `information hub" that will cater to a broad spectrum of viewers. "We are trying to evolve our news into one with nationwide coverage and shift from a Delhi centric focus," said sources.
The changes have been undertaken as the viewer response has been poor. Researchrevealed that customers wanted more in terms of news and views, said sources.
Sources said that the channel has also affected top-level changes in the editorial department, with former Pioneer Bureau chief Bharat Kumar Raut having been given charge of events. Rakesh Khar, news editor, has now been brought into brand management as co-brand manager. Prasun Sonwalkar of Business Standard, Shailesh from Aaj Tak, Govind Singh of Navbharat Times and Madhusudan from TV 18 have also joined the Zee bandwagon in the recent past.
