Wheat glut to put India back on export map

UNITED NEWS OF INDIA
NEW DELHI, May 10: A bumper crop of more than 72 million tonnes has forced the Centre to actively work on a proposal to export wheat, hitherto an import commodity. ``The government will take a decision on export of wheat soon,'' minister of state for agriculture Som Pal said after a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Prices (CCP) here on Monday.

The meeting was presided over by Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Som Pal said that the CCP reviewed the crop production estimates of rabi season (1998-99) and expressed satisfaction over the comfortable position of almost all commodities including pulses, oilseeds and rice.
