Mumbai, May 6: Ford India Ltd on Thursday said the central government needs to clarify the definition of Euro-I and Euro-II fuel emission norms forthwith, in the context of the Indian drive cycle, test procedures and reference fuel.``At present, the Supreme Court order states that the manufacturer's satisfaction on compliance with emission norms is to be accepted by the registration authorities. This, too, needs to be clearly conveyed to the registration authorities,'' Ford India managing director Philip G Spender said.
Full compliance will also call for strict enforcement of inspection and maintenance of vehicles already in use. Old vehicles that do not conform to the required environment and safety norms should also be eliminated gradually,'' he said.
Spender, in a release, said Ford's new car code-named `C195', to be introduced later this year worldwide including India, would be fully Euro-II compliant.
Ford Escort petrol version, which has been tested for Euro-I norms, also meets all requisitionslaid down for the Euro-II requirements, while the diesel version is currently under test, he said.
Spender said clean air can be achieved in a joint effort by the government and industry and hoped that government will utilise this opportunity as a stepping stone to ensure availability of good quality fuel for lower emissions.
The government, auto manufacturers and petroleum industry should develop a road map together with long and short-term goals, he said.
