Mumbai, May 4: Spices market at Navi Mumbai witnessed divergent activities in trading during the week ended April 30. Prices of most of the commodities remained steady while turmeric recovered after losing heavily in the previous weeks. Black pepper fluctuated in narrow ranges.
According to Rasik Mehta, a leading exporter of spices, the price of corainder also gained sharply while prices of fenugreek staged a smart rally. Chillies turned further easy as arrivals mismatched offtake and black pepper receded on improved supplies.
Turmeric: Fall in arrivals and stockists entering into market lifted up the price of turmeric by Rs 300 per quintal. In Sangli, prices rose sharply to Rs 2,600 for spot and Rs 2,300/2,600 for truckloads. In Mumbai FOL (Free On Lorry) prices for Nizamabad were Rs 2,500/2,550 against the previous week's Rs 2,000/2,200, Rs 2,550/2,600 (Rs 2,250/2,300) for Cuddapah variety, Rs 2,550/2,600 (2,200/2,250) for Duggirala variety and Rs 2,750/2,850 (Rs 2,300/2,350) for the Sangli polishedturmeric finger variety per quintal.
Corainder: Prices continued a sharp rally. Declining arrivals of Badami variety fuelled the price rise. Indore average ruled at Rs 1,300/1,350 (Rs 1,200/1,250) while Kanpur average at Rs 1,400/1,450 (Rs 1,300). Machine cleaned (M/C) and washed Kanpur at Rs 1,550/1800 (Rs 1,700/1,800) and M/C and washed Indore at Rs 1,450/1700 (Rs 1,400/1,650). The 100 per cent split M/C ruled steady at Rs 1,050/1,075 per quintal.
Cumin: Prices fluctuated range bound. Arrivals at Unjha continued at about 10,000 bags a day. The 1 per cent M/C for Singapore/Dubai quality ruled at Rs 1,175/1,200 (Rs 1,140/1,150), while for Europe it was steady at around Rs 1,250/1,275 (Rs 1,275/1,300). The 4 per cent M/C for Ceylon/Dubai ruled at Rs 1,125/1,140 (Rs 1,140/1,150) per 20 kilograms FOL Mumbai.
Fennel: Prices more or less ruled steady at same levels. Dubai/Singapore quality was at Rs 850/875 and for London/Europe quality at Rs 900/925 (Rs 900/950) per 20 kgs at FOB Mumbai.
Fenugreek: Pricesimproved by Rs 100 per quintal led by heavy buying pressure from stockists. Export demand was also supportive. The M/C best bold ruled at Rs 2,000/2,200 (Rs 1,950/2,000), medium best machine cleaned at Rs 1650/1675 (Rs 1,550/1,600) and average at Rs 1,550/1,575 (Rs 1,450/1,475).
Dill seed: Prices ruled firm at higher levels. The 1 per cent M/C ruled steady at Rs 3,800 and 11 per cent FAQ slightly higher at Rs 3,400 (Rs 3,300). New crop ruled steady at Rs 4,100 per quintal FOL Mumbai.
Ajwain: Firm prices at previous week's levels prevailed. Jamnagar ruled between Rs 5,000/5,800 (5,500), MP superior Rs 5,800/6,000 (Rs 5,600/5,800) and medium at Rs 5,200/ 5,500 (Rs 5,000/5,200) per quintal FOL Mumbai.
Chillies: Prices remained subdued. Inferior quality of goods were cheap. Chillies with stem ruled at Rs 2,900/3,000 (Rs 2,950/3,050) while chillies without stem ruled higher at Rs 4,250/4,350 (Rs 4,200/4,300) per quintal FOB Mumbai.
Tamarind: Prices ruled firm at higher levels. Basket was quoted at Rs2,400/3,000 (Rs 2,400/2,500), slab at Rs 2,600/3,300 (Rs 2,800/3,000) while consumer packs at Rs 2,800/3,500 (Rs 3,200/3,400).
Black pepper: Offers from Malabar were bit easy. The commodity shed Rs 10 per kg om improved arrivals. Cochin ready delivery, ungarbled loose ruled at Rs 1,70,000 (Rs 1,80,000) per MT. In futures section at Cochin May delivery ruled at Rs 1,73,500 (Rs 1,87,750) and June delivery at Rs 1,73,500 (Rs 1,87,500) per quintal FOB Cochin. The MG-1 FOB Cochin ruled at Rs 1,82,000 (Rs 1,96,000) and FOL Mumbai ruled at Rs 1,81,000 (Rs 1,90,000) per MT.
Ginger: Prices edged down on poor offtake. The NUGC good FOB Cochin ruled at Rs 85,000 (Rs 88,000) and FOL Mumbai at Rs 82.000 (Rs 88,000) per MT.
Sesameseeds: Prices ruled steady in absence of fresh demand. The 98x2 jumped at Rs 3,700/3,750, while 95x2 at Rs 3,300/3,350 (Rs 3,350/3,400). Hulled ruled at Rs 4,400/4,500 (4,400/4,500).
Peanuts: Gujarat was offering new crop at steady prices. New crop is likely to gain momentum this weekomwards. Prices of 45/50 counts are Rs 2,650/2,700, 50/60 counts at Rs 2,500/2,550 (Rs 2,600/2,625) and 60/70 counts at Rs 2,400/2,450 and 70/80 counts at Rs 2,300/2,350 and 80/90 counts at Rs 2,225/2,250 (2,200/2,250).
