Graviera targets Rs 230 crore turnover in 1999-2000

Charanjit Ahuja
Chandigarh, May 4: A unit of Rs 3600 crore Grasim Industries Ltd -- Bhiwani Textile Mills producing Graviera suiting is targeting Rs 230 crore turnover for the year 1999-2000.

The turnover of this unit was about Rs 200 crore during 1998-1999. Bhiwani Textile Mills is a unit of the multi-technology, multi-product, industrial conglomerate -- the Aditya Birla Group and is composite mill having spinning, weaving and processing under one roof.

Executive president of Bhiwani Textile Mills, DS Agarwal told The Financial Express in an interview after the launch of "Wonder Wash Fabric" that the company was exporting suiting to several countries except the United States.

He claimed that even United States would be a big market for the new product and the company was exploring the possibilities for the same. Last year exports accounted for about Rs 25 crore which would be the tune of about Rs 35 crore during 1999-2000.

About the new product Wonder Wash Fabric, Agarwal claimed that this fabric was beingintroduced for the first time in the world of synthetic suiting and it markets a major technological breakthrough.

One does not require any detergent or soap to wash normal type of stains which adhere to fabrics or suiting in day-to-day work like oil, tea, coffee, tomato sauce and vegetable curry. Its detergent free properties are a result of year-long intensive research, state-of-the-art process and technological innovation.

The Graviera had developed the Wonder Wash Fabric by imparting special treatment with a chemical and the simple to use double coat system demonstrates excellent stain clearing performance even after aging and washing.

Unlike microporous structure, this solid film does not rely on surface tension effect to repel soil and is not prone to contamination from and dirt and stains.

The benefit of the special treatment to the fabric are that it requires no detergent or soap during washing and reduces the frequency of washing. All that it needs is dip the fabric in warm water for 3 to 5minutes, rinse, wriggle and dry in shade. Additionally the special treatment makes the fabric 20 per cent more durable, soft and wearable during hot weather.

Agarwal said that Graviera had pioneered innovation and research in textile industry during recent years by launching technological innovations and unique finishes in the blended suiting.

Conventionally denim had always been associated with cotton until Graviera launched Sumo -- a poly-viscose blended denim with cotton inner lining. Sumo is the fist synthetic denim in the world offering cotton comforts.

Graviera is planning to install high tech looms and modernise its process house during the current financial year for which plans are being readied. It currently exports approximately 2.5 lakh meters fabric per month to middle east, South Arabia, Singapore, France, Cyprus, South Africa and Latin American countries. This is likely to be increased to 4.0 lakh meters in the coming six months.
