Mumbai, Apr 27: For the second successive year, term-lending institution ICICI has overtaken Industrial Development Bank of India (IDBI) in fiscal 1999 both in terms of sanctions and disbursals.The performance review of ICICI for 1999, distributed during the press conference held on Monday to announce the institution's annual results, has shown charts depicting sanctions and disbursement figures of three insitutions--including IDBI and Industrial Finance Corporation of India (IFCI).
It has pegged IDBI's approvals during the year at Rs 25,578 crore and disbursals at Rs 14,350 crore against ICICI's approvals of Rs 34,330 crore and disbursals Rs 19,225 crore.
However, an IDBI official said the institution is yet to finalise even the provisional figures of sanctions and disbursements for 1998-99. "We do not agree with the ICICI figures about our sanctions and disbursals," the official said, adding that the institution does not approve of the manner in which ICICI has projected other FIs' business figuresin its performance review.
The institution is going to release its provisional figure soon, he said.
ICICI sources said the data given were actually compiled by the IDBI for the entire industry. Neither IDBI nor IFCI officially has yet released these data to the press.
According to the ICICI report, IDBI's sanctions have recorded a 6.57 per cent increase in fiscal 1999--from Rs 23,999 crore to Rs 25,578 crore. IDBI's disbursements have been shown to have taken a dip by 5.48 per cent from 15,183 crore to Rs 14,350 crore during the year.
IDBI sanctions during 1997-98 had aggregated Rs 24,097 crore, registering a growth of 41.3 per cent over the previous year's level of 17,050 crore. The disbursements during the year amounted to Rs 15,119 crore which was 32.2 per cent higher than the disbursements (Rs 11,439 crore) made in 1996-97.
The Delhi-based IFCI has recorded a 8.85 per cent increase in its sanctions, the ICICI performance review pointed out. Its sanctions have moved upwards from Rs 7,981 croreto Rs 8,684 crore during the year.
However, IFCI's disbursement have been shown to have dipped by 16.28 per cent during the year. Its disbursements have come down from Rs 5,650 crore to Rs 4,.730 crore during the year.
ICICI has posted sanctions worth Rs 34,220 crore and disbursements worth Rs 19,225 crore in fiscal 1999, recording a growth of 38 per cent and 22 per cent. This is in sharp contrast to a 75 per cent growth in sanctions (Rs 24,717 crore) and 41 per cent growth in disbursements (Rs 15,807 crore) registered in 1997-98.
