SmithKline Beecham plans Rs 252 cr malted food plant in Haryana

Chandigarh, Apr 27: SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare Ltd (SBCH), the nutritional healthcare leader, is setting up a state-of-the-art spray drying malted food plant at Sonepat in Haryana with a an initial investment of Rs 252 crore in the first phase.

According to information available here, the project would be among the largest 20 spray dryers in the world with a production capacity of approximately 26,000 metric tonnes per annum of malted food products.

The plant would be erected as per global standards with pollution control and eco-friendliness as its cornerstone. The project would be extremely low on water effluent and emissions.

The entire water effluent would be contained within the site itself with the aid of state-of-art ETP plants and lagoons, together with eco-plantations which would consist of about 5,000 trees. The effort would service several purposes but most importantly it would improve the ecological balance of the area.

According to information provided on behalf of the companyby Bhavana Lal, the project would have high quality standards, safety standards and an eco-friendly design.

The plant would be housed in a hygienic production building with a controlled environment which would include filtration of air with HEPA filters which remove fine dust particles, bacteria and fungus spores as is done in sterile pharmaceutical facilities.

The walls and floors would have special polymer finishes to ensure high levels of cleanliness. SmithKline Beecham remains committed to putting up a plant in accordance with international standards.

Director (industries), Haryana, Rajeev Arora said the Haryana government was committed to the development of the infrastructure sector which would act as catalyst for attracting investment in the state and the present project was a perfect illustration of the collaborative efforts between Haryana state and a major multinational.

SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare is an Indian associate of SmithKline Beecham of the UK and has continually benefitedfrom the technical and marketing inputs that had been available as a consequence of this association.

The SBCH is the largest player in domestic malted food industry. The company has two manufacturing plants located at Nabha and Rajahmundry and a total workforce of over 2600 people besides having strong marketing and distribution network in India of over 1000 wholesalers and direct coverage of over 325,000 retail outlets.

Its flagship product, Horlicks is a widely regarded and highly respected 110-year old brand. Other products include Boost, Eno, Crocin, Tums, Acquafresh and Horlicks Biscuits.
