Natural rubber output falls short of target
Hit by lower prices and slump in demand, the country's natural rubber production exceeded demand for the second consecutive year and also fell short of the output target by 4 per cent in 1998-99, a Rubber Board data said on Monday. Though rubber production increased by 3.6 per cent to 6.05 lakh tonnes as compared to 5.85 lakh tonnes produced last year, it still was lower than the 6.8 per cent output target against last year's production set by the government. The Rubber Board had anticipated a fall in rubber production in 1998-99 and had scaled down the output to 6.10 lakh tonnes predicting a 4.5 per cent growth over last year. However, in the final analysis it fell even short of the revised target. The lower production has been attributed to reduced number of tapping by growers, who were concerned over sagging prices for the commodity which hit a seven-year low two months ago. Rubber consumption also fell below the targeted level of six lakh tonnes to 5.92 lakh tonnes. This is the second consecutive yearwhen consumption has been lower than production. Last year, consumption was 5.78 lakh tonnes.AP prawn exports to go up
Production of exportable prawn in coastal Andhra Pradesh during the first crop season this year was expected to be worth Rs 1,000 crore, according to the Marine Production Export Development Authority (MPEDA). The deputy director at MPEDA's regional centre in Vijayawada, B Vishnubhat on Monday told PTI that though the prawn cultivators had faced some setbacks due to spread of I virus-white spot disease between January and early March, the condition had improved from the second week of March. Non-availability of quality seed and unfavourable environmental conditions were the main reasons for the disease, Vishnubhat said. The production till now was 16,000-17,000 tonnes, worth about Rs 700 crore, he said and added that these would go up as the season would end only in June. During 1998, the production in the first season from the coastal belt of Andhra was about 30,000 tonnes, worth Rs 1,125 crore, he said.
