Anybody who goes in for designer clothes, will definitely like to dress up their bedrooms, windows or other areas in their homes. `Window Passion', a venture of Anita and Rajiv Kanwar, has a designer line of soft furnishing that include window dressings, bed covers, linen, table covers and bathroom mats.``We are the pioneers in this field,'' claim the Kanwars. And everything in the houses, offices can be changed according to the needs, the location of the clients, they add.
Soft furnishings is a field in which constant innovation and designing are the keys to success, they add. ``We are not a shop where one can walk in and pick up stuff. Everything is based on the clients' demands and their designs,'' they say.
The Kanwars have a factory in Shahpur Jat, Delhi, where they supervise the production themselves instead of leaving it to contractors.
``If we were to give it to the contractors, our clients may not be left with any exclusivity, for which they hope. We are always there to coordinate with theclients' needs and ideas,'' the Kanwars add. For them it's a total package offered. ``If they want us to dress up their house, we then work along with the interior designers and the clients, all together,'' they add. While the curtains, or cushion covers in earlier days were given to the tailors, the Kanwars have replaced them with their own productions and provide not only the accessories, but also suggest additions, that could enhance the look of an area.
``We don't sell as cheap or expensive, what we provide for the customer is the simplest to the most intricate stuff,'' they say. ``For instance, what makes our chiks different from the others is that get them woven as per the requirements of the customers and their concepts,'' the Kanwars point out. The demands of the customers vary. People have different life styles, like in Jeddah, they wanted to show mehrabs, so we got chik curtains woven like that, they say.
``We have been in this line for almost ten years now and cater not only to our exclusiveclientele from big corporate houses but we do it for our friends also,'' they add.
When they started this business there was not much awareness amongst the people that a such things can be done for specific designs too, and of course make them aware of the difference it makes to the house, offices, palaces and farm houses, they claim. The money that we have been investing so far has been in importing machinery/ accessories from Europe and the US primarily.
``The client often gives the fabric and the colour combinations and then we design for them. At times the clients seek our help in buying the specific fabric. It takes not less than 3-4 weeks for a certain thing to be readied. The time consumed is because everything is tailor made for the client,'' they say. ``We travel abroad a lot and that's where the niche market is. There are no professional outfits to make such things,'' they say. It's a constant process of interaction with the clients wherein the designs are discussed right from the conception tothe final product. For the fine end product, the endeavour is to keep upgrading their machineries.
There is AN equal emphasis on quality and designs. They do not advertise, it's purely the word of mouth that they have their clients. ``While we have our presence in Jaipur and Ahmedabad, we hope to be all over the country,'' they add. Internationally, they have had their share of work in London, Australia, Kuwait, Jeddah.
``We wish to expand, but not too much, since our work is not volume based. It takes six months of constant interaction with the clients and if at any stage we cannot vibe well, then we pull out,'' they point out. The Kanwars are hoping that the trend of exclusive linen will catch on with the corporate world and there business will boom.
