The 1998/99 meeting at Mumbai was originally scheduled to conclude with tomorrow's card, but has been extended by a further week and now winds up on May 2nd, just a few hours after what is termed the "most exciting two minutes in sport", the race known as the Kentucky Derby, is run in distant Louisville. By this time of the year, both the horses and their connections here have had enough, even as their compatriots in foreign climes get into full swing after a winter hiatus.Fields this Sunday are pathetically small, and about the only real attraction is the chance to win a Maruti 800 car for one lucky punter amongst those who hold a live jackpot ticket after four legs have been contested.
Just four face the starter in each of the first two events. In the opening metric mile event, Payback and Thundering Beauty are well exposed, while Fortune Favours and Just For You have been sparingly campaigned this season and are entitled to come on significantly from their last efforts. As the latter is better off atthe weights, he is preferred.
Perhaps a shade unlucky to come across one as good as Cyber Space last time out, the oddly-named Phraoje is ideally placed in the 1,800 metres Racing Officials Trophy. His stable is in irresistible form and the horse himself has been consistent this term, while still possessing a little scope for improvement. He is lightly raced for one of his vintage, and should be able to put it across Mountain Wind, also racing consistently of late.
Sun Warrior comes off a win over substantially the same company. He has, of course, received the handicapper's attention and gone up in the weights, but one cannot say he has been harshly treated, hence a repeat is on the cards. One We Love was prominent last time before retiring to finish a quiet fifth. Charging Bullet, now in different hands, has almost forgotten how to win as it is over a year since he last scored and he has placed nine times in the interim.
Some close handicapping makes the 1800 metres Racing Journalists Trophy aminefield. Any of the trio of Handsome, Agula and Correct Ball can win. The only other significant runner is Buttero, whose trainer has elected to take on Class IV company with him even though he is badly off at the weights. Perhaps she feels he needs the added distance. A watching brief is advised. Eleven maidens take each other on in a scurry. Several of these have not yet seen the starter. Something must have been amiss with Kildangan when she ended up last of eight at her previous start. Prior to that the Cristofori filly from the painstaking Vinayak's yard had just knuckled under to Stellar Angel in a photo. She has since worked well and could be back to her best. Arabella is another to have been noted by those who log morning track work as one who was "moving freely".
Song Of Freedom has won two of her four lifetime starts, all of them in 1999. She has received a huge penalty for her last two wins and now finds herself in the upper regions of Class III. Mick's Mystique looks the best of Antia's trio, with Dillinger from Sorab Jilla's stable also in the reckoning.
Finally, Shaandaari has beaten most of this lot and comes off a win. Probably the best strategy here would be to follow the money.
Four winners clash with a pair of unraced maidens. The form lines are difficult to match, but visual observation coupled with the credentials of the participants highlight Crystal Girl and Gold Buck. The latter was relatively unfancied on his winning debut for an inmate of his particular yard, so can be expected to strip even fitter this time. Crystal Girl looks as if she will make the running and with speed holding out quite well should just about fend off her rival.
