Rain, thundershowers likely in north-east

NEW DELHI, APRIL 18: Scattered rain or thundershowers are likely to occur in eastern and north-eastern Himalayan range especially in West Bengal, Sikkim, north-eastern states and Andaman & Nicobar Islands.

Isolated rain or thundershowers are likely in Jammu & Kashmir, Bihar plateau, Orissa, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, South Konkan and Lakshadweep.

Weather Review: During the week ended April 1, rain or snow occurred at a few places in Jammu & Kashmir and at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh. Rain or thundershowers also occurred at a many places in sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and Andaman & Nicobar Islands, at few places in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Tamil Nadu, south interior Karnataka and Kerala and at isolated places in Bihar plains, Orissa, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalseema, coastal and north interior Karnataka and Lakshadweep. Weather remained mainly dry in the rest regions of the country.

During the week endedApril 14, rainfall was normal to excess in five meteorological subdivisions of the country, deficient to scanty in 14 subdivisions and 16 subdivisions received no rainfall. During the period March 1 to April 14, the cumulative rainfall was excess in only two meteorological subdivisions namely Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Lakshadweep, normal in one subdivision namely south interior Karnataka, deficient in six subdivisions and scanty in 19 subdivisions. Seven meteorological subdivisions namely, east Rajasthan, west MP, Gujarat region, Daman, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Saurashtra, Kutch & Diu, Konkan & Goa, central Maharashtra and Marathwada received no rainfall since March 1, this year.

Temperatures: Severe heat wave conditions prevailed in Rajasthan, Haryana and Punjab during the first three days of the week ended April 14. Heat wave conditions also prevailed in remaining parts of northwest and in central India during the entire week. During the later part of the week heat wave conditions extended toBihar plains, Assam, Nagaland, Tripura, north central Maharashtra, Vidarbha, Telangana, coastal Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu. The day temperatures were above normal by 2øC to 3øC in the remaining parts of the country.

Heat wave conditions are still prevailing in parts of Jammu & Kashmir, but they have abated from east UP by April 15. On April 15, day temperatures fell in the plains of UP and changed little elsewhere. They were appreciably above normal in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir and normal in the rest of the region of north India. The highest day temperature of 45.8øC was recorded at Dholpur in Rajasthan on April 8, 1999.

On April 16, the early morning maximum day temperatures were, however, one degree below normal in Delhi, Jaipur and Ahmedabad. They were normal in Chandigarh, Hissar, Patiala, Allahabad, Varanasi, Bhopal and Pune. They were above normal by one degree in Jammu, Amritsar, Udaipur, Lucknow, Dehradun, Agartala and Mumbai followed by 2øC above normal in Bhubaneswar,Calcutta, Nagpur, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram, 3øC above normal in Shimla, Bangalore and Shillong. The early morning maximum day temperatures were 4øC above normal in Hyderabad, followed by 5øC above normal in Guwahati and Srinagar, 6øC above normal in Imphal and 8øC above normal in Chennai.

On April 16, the early morning minimum day temperatures were 5øC below normal in Udaipur followed by 4øC below normal in Jammu, Amritsar, Bhopal, and Patna, 3øC below normal in Delhi and Patiala, 2øC below normal in Srinagar, Jaipur, Allahabad, Varanasi, Dehradun and Pune, one degree below normal in Hissar and Mumbai. They were normal in Lucknow, Hyderabad and Thiruvananthapuram. The early morning minimum day temperatures were above normal by 3øC in Agartala and Shillong followed by 2øC above normal in Calcutta and 1øC above normal in Chandigarh, Shimla, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar and Chennai.

Haze situation: Haze was seen in the early hours of the morning in Delhi, Jammu, Jaipur, Allahabad, Lucknow, Varanasi,Dehradun, Bangalore, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Nagpur, Patna and Thiruvananthapuram.
