Bell Atlantic in $800m deal with Alcatel: Bell Atlantic has finalised a $800-million agreement with Alcatel for voice and data access networking equipment, making Alcatel the primary ADSL vendor for Bell Atlantic. Alcatel will supply more than 50 per cent of Bell Atlantic's ADSL equipment by integrating its Alcatel 1000 ADSL ATM subscriber access multiplexer (ASAM) and Litespan Next Generation Digital Loop Carrier (NGDLC) solutions. Alcatel's combination of its ASAM and Litespan ADSL products provides a comprehensive, integrated access solution.West Asian edition of Computer Home launched: Asia's leading information technology publishers, Cyber Media (India) Ltd (CMIL), has launched the West Asian edition of the home and small office computing magazine -- Computer Home -- in association with Express Print and Publishers, Dubai. Computers Home would reach out to families and professionals in Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Dubai, Kuwait, Qatar and parts of North Africa. "It addresses the rapidlygrowing home computing segment and the universe of new computer users wanting to learn how to use technology for work, education and entertainment," a company release said. The magazine devotes 15 per cent of its editorial content on the internet. CMIL's other publications include Dataquest, of PC Quest, and Voice and Data.
BT, Smartone announce strategic alliance: British Telecommunications has formed an alliance with SmarTone Telecommunication Holding Ltd through a direct equity purchase of 20 per cent of the enlarged share capital of a fully diluted basis, made possible through the issuance of 120,782,250 new shares in SmarTone. This move by BT represents a HK$3 billion investment in SmarTone at a price of HK$25 per share. The deal will combine BT's global competitive, marketing and technological skills and capabilities with the local market knowledge and experience of SmarTone, one of Asia's best-managed and financially strong mobile operators.
