Numbers in parliament a problem for Centre: Advani

FE NEWS SERVICE
New Delhi, Apr 7: Home minister LK Advani on Wednesday admitted that "numbers" in parliament were a problem for the BJP-led Government at the Centre but expressed hope that the Government would weather the present crisis.

"Our problem is not our allies or our own party but our `ganit' (numbers) in parliament. This problem has been there since we came to power," he said at Greater Noida, 30 km from here.

"Our Government never bothered about whether it stayed or not," the home minister said.

But he expressed hope that the Vajpayee Government would weather the present crisis, and said: "Ever since this Government took over, people have been saying its fall was imminent. But they were disappointed earlier and will be disappointed now."

The home minister was addressing a gathering after laying the foundation stone of Kailash Hospital at Greater Noida.

About the BJP Government's one-year in office, Advani said that Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the only non-Congress Prime Minister since 1991 to complete 12months in office. But one year in power is not an achievement, he said, adding, "Our achievement is what we did in the last one year,"Claiming that the economic situation has improved due to the BJP's policies, he said the Vajpayee Government aimed to put India among the leading nations in the 21st century.

Advani regretted that social initiative had taken a backseat in India at the cost of development.

"India's development process has suffered due to the debate on whether state control should be there or not in key sectors," he said.
