Bengal trade body calls on minister to beef up security

Calcutta, Apr 7: The Bengal Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) on Wednesday held an emergency of its executive members over the disappearance of Exide Industries Ltd chairman SB Ganguly. Later a delegation from the business community met state home minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on the issue.

A BCCI press release said the delegation made specific suggestions like improving security and surveillance in the city, which were well received by the government.

The release noted that the delegation, which included representatives of the various chambers in the city, is confident that there will be improvement in the overall security environment in the city.

BCCI's emergency meeting was presided over by president Bhaskar Banerjee and attended by several former presidents and senior members of the committee.Expressing serious concern at Ganguly's disappearance the committee felt that the state government needs to be proactive and should implement suitable preventive measures immediately.

The releasestated that the committee made the following five broad suggestions to the state government:

  • Increasing police patrolling in sensitive areas;
  • Equipping police vehicles with modern communication devices;
  • Having strategic road barriers at appropriate places, especially during early morning and late night hours;
  • Strengthening of police intelligence network; and,
  • Setting up of a special cell for dealing with cases of abduction and disappearance.

    It noted that the chamber committee felt certain internal security manuals available with some multinational members of the chamber could be extended and utilised by other corporate members.
