Sunflower harvest on in Argentina

REUTERS
Buenos Aires, Apr 7: Argentina's sunflower crop for 1998-99season has been 66.5 per cent harvested, covering 2.6 million hectares on March 26, the agriculture department said in its weekly crop update.

Entre Rios province was the leader in progress with 93.2 per cent of planted area collected, followed by Santa FE. The harvest is lagging behind last year, when 71 per cent of the flowers had been picked. Improved weather encouraged sunseed collection to plod ahead in the centre-west of Buenos Aires, though large swaths of area were still too wet to allow progress. In the South of the province, the yields were low, ranging between 1.0 tonne and 1.5 tonnes per hectare. Fresh rains in Cordoba, totalling up to 60 millimetres, caused losses in some areas. La Pampa was dry and registered excellent average yields of 2.2 tonnes per hectare with high oil content. Total output for the season is estimated at 6.7 million.
