US opposition to EU banana exports illegal

The European Commission has said that the US retaliation against EU banana exports is largely illegal as it is set at a level well over double of that determined by the arbitrator. In a statement issued to the press, vice-president, European Commission, Leon Brittan, has said that the EC would carefully study both the arbitrator's report and the two panel reports and meanwhile would reserve its right to appeal. The EC would abide by the rules applicable in the case of such decisions.

The US has gone beyond the procedures established under the WTO dispute settlement understanding in order to take unilateral retaliatory action against the EU, said Brittan. To comply with the law the US must immediately end sanctions and the threat of sanctions on over half the trade currently subject to them, he added.
