Chennai/New Delhi, Apr 5: The BJP-led coalition Government inched a step closer to collapse with AIADMK deciding on Monday night to withdraw its ministers from the Vajpayee ministry after the Cabinet decided to reject Jayalalitha's demands. The two AIADMK members, law minister Thambidurai and minister of state for finance KMR Janarthanan, will submit their resignation on Tuesday, AIADMK chief Jayalalitha said in a statement after a lengthy discussion with party leaders and MPs.
She said the party would take a final decision on continuance of support to Vajpayee government after discussion with other political parties.
The AIADMK chief said she proposed to visit Delhi from April 12 to hold discussions with leading political personalities to explore the possibilities of forming a Government that "delivers rather than promises and that does not discriminate on the grounds of religion, caste or region."
In her three-page statement, Jayalalitha said an "unprecedented" decision was taken by the Cabinet toreject the party demands. As with Bhagwat, no reasons were given for this "extraordinary act of discourtesy to an allied party."
"In the 50 years of democracy, never had a Cabinet met with the single-point agenda of slighting an ally that is responsible for the majority the Vajpayee government had thus far enjoyed in the Lok Sabha," she said.
The AIADMK would not swerve from its determination to ensure that the country enjoyed a government that could ensure social stability and economic growth, she said.
The party's decision came following rejection of Jayalalitha's demands on the Bhagwat issue by the Cabinet earlier in the day. The cabinet outrightly rejected the three demands of sacking defence minister George Fernandes, reinstating dismissed naval chief Vishnu Bhagwat and a JPC probe into the allegations made against Fernandes by Bhagwat.
Even though Congress continued to maintain a cautious stand saying that the party would take the "right decision at the right time", the numbers game seem to havebegun in right earnest. The Left parties and other constituents of the erstwhile United Front announced that they will give outside support to a non-BJP government at the Centre in the event of the BJP-led coalition losing its majority in Lok Sabha. Surjeet said all UF constituents, barring TDP, which is now in the ruling coalition, would support a non-BJP government "from outside".
CPM leader Harkishan Singh Surjeet said "Vajpayee now has no moral grounds but to resign as his Government will not be able to muster majority support in the absence of AIADMK."
Surjeet, who is in touch with leaders of Congress and other Opposition parties, said BJP's claim that the Government would be able to muster a majority "can be achieved only through horsetrading".
He discussed the political situation on Monday with Congress leader K Natwar Singh and Samajwadi Party president Mulayam Singh Yadav. He is likely to meet RJD chief Laloo Prasad Yadav, who is arriving here on Tuesday from Patna.
Meanwhile, the Governmentasserted that it would prove its majority in Lok Sabha despite Jayalalitha's threat to withdraw support.
Briefing reporters after the 90-minute meeting, information and broadcasting minister Pramod Mahajan said "we have proved our majority in the past and if necessary, we will again prove it on the floor of the house."
"We have responded to her demands and it is now for her to decide the future course of action," Mahajan said.
However, he said the Vajpayee Government did not perceive any threat to its survival and was confident of proving its majority as and when required.
Mahajan said there was no need of bringing a no-confidence motion against the government again and again, and added if the Opposition insisted on it the coalition government was ready to face it. "In politics one should be ready for all types of eventuality", he said.
