INSA demands better deal from government
Our Bureau
Mumbai, Mar 30: The Indian Shipowners Association has asked for a level playing field vis-a-vis its foreign competitors. Director general of shipping, SK Saha said at a press conference here on Tuesday that among the issues that were affecting Indian shipping was the discrimination against employees serving on Indian vessels. According to Rohet Tolani, president of INSA, the shipping industry has in the past missed several opportunities for augmenting their fleet and manpower resources. He hoped that the Indian shipping industry would not lose out on the next major business opportunity - LNG transport.KM Sheth, chairman and managing director, Great Eastern Shipping Company (GESCO), accused the government of unfair practices in awarding the contract for LNG transport for the Dabhol Power project to a consortium comprising Shipping Corporation of India and Mitsui. According to Sheth, the minutes of the meeting with the Indian shipowners were fudged by the government to enable them to give the contract to acompany, where India did not have majority shareholding.
