Kazakh tea dues lead to diplomatic row: Non-payment of dues to the tune of $9 million to Indian tea exporters has sparked off a major diplomatic row between India and Kazakhstan, leading to low business confidence between the two countries. Kazakhstan owes the amount towards shipments of two consignments of tea during 1993-94 and its silence on the issue had resulted in the Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGC) stopping extension of any cover to Indian exporters for shipments to the Central Asian republic, industry sources told PTI. Kazakhstan had accepted that it owes the amount and a decree was issued by the Central Asian republic prime minister in May 1996. Three deputy prime ministers had since then confirmed and reconfirmed the obligations but till now no payment had been made, they said. "This is one of the factors stopping Indian business community from expanding its activities in Kazakhstan," the sources said.FCI employees threaten stir: The employees of the FoodCorporation of India (FCI) on Wednesday threatened to go on a one-day strike on March 26 to protest against the management's indifferent attitude towards their demands including a time-bound promotion policy. The call for agitation was given by national committee of FCI employees union, which has around 35,000 employees. Banks, affiliated to the FCI employees union, will also participate in the strike, the release said. They will also organise an employees rally on Friday in the capital in which members from all over the country are expected to participate, it said.
