MTNL directory to be available by month-end

The long-awaited telephone directory for Delhi denizens will be available by this month-end.

About 1.5 lakh copies have already been printed, said CV Rajan, chief general manager of Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL). From next month, 1 lakh copies will be distributed every week.

The three-volume directory will have four columns for residential numbers and three columns for business establishments. The business information volume will be in colour.

MTNL is printing 16 lakh copies of the Delhi telephones directory at a cost of Rs 30 crore. It is already available on the internet. The CD-ROM version is updated till November 1 last.

The printing of directory has been entangled in litigation for the past four years. The earlier edition was printed in 1994.

Zee Premiere

The Calcutta high court has stated that Subhash Chandra-controlled Zee Network could continue with the title of its recently-launched film magazine ZeePremiere.

Hachette Filipacchi Press SA of France had earlier obtained an injunction against Zee Premiere against the title, since the former are the owners of the French glossy Premiere.

C-Dac unveils multilingual software

The Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) has unveiled its multilingual software - iLEAP-ISP - targeting internet subscribers. C-DAC has also signed an agreement with the Pune-based DishNet Ltd and talks are on with the Satyam group and Wipro Infotech for offering the software which is available in all Indian languages.

Under its iLEAP-ISP scheme, a multilingual word processor with internet and e-mail support in Indian languages will be made available free of cost to all internet subscribers through their internet service providers (ISPs), a C-DAC official said.

Cyber dhaba set up

The first cyber dhaba with e-mail facility to help better communications in rural areas was opened in Ismailganj (Lucknow).

The series of cyber dhabas,a joint venture between Uptron Electronics and Koshika Telecom as part of the revival plan for the state unit, will be established along with mobile public telephone booths in rural areas of the state, Uptron managing director Arun Arya said on Sunday.

Messages could be transmitted directly to the addressee when he has an e-mail connection and in case he does not have an e-mail address, then the message could be sent to a pre-destined e-mail account from where they could be sent by courier.

The service would be upgraded by transferring documents through e-mail in future. Services such as railway enquiries would also be available at the dhaba, Arya added. Moreover, villagers could now directly address their grievances to state headquarters from here.

Alcatel unveils One Touch Pocket

Alcatel has launched a new cellular phone, One Touch Pocket, targeted at business users.

Launched in Mumbai in association with Max Touch, a leading service provider, the phone, weighing 125 gms, comes with abuilt-in modem and does not require an additional PCIMCA card, said a company statement.

This enables a user to send and receive e-mail, manage files from a distance and surf the internet by linking the telephone to the port of a PC using a serial cable.

Features include a large screen and three distinct phone books, short messaging, a calculator and company phone directories.

The model will be subsequently launched in Delhi, Bangalore and Hyderabad.

ITIL profit at Rs 21.38 crore

Information Technologies (India) Ltd (ITIL) has recorded a profit of Rs 21.38 crore over the nine-month period to February 28, in comparison with last year's full year profit of Rs 10.88 crore.

According to the unaudited figures for the three months ending February 28, 1999, the company has recorded a turnover of Rs 26 crore and five lakh, said a press statement.

ITIL also announced the diversification of its business to run software training centres across the country.
