Veterinary drug firm Radix may face shutdown
Agencies
Milwaukee, Mar 5: An Eau Claire veterinary drug manufacturer with a troubled history with regulators faces possible shutdown for continued non-compliance with the Food and Drug Act, according to documents filed Monday in federal court. According to the complaint and injunction request, Radix Laboratories Inc. has recalled drug products 17 times in the past five years because they contained contaminates. Radix has received several complaints that use of its products killed or seriously injured animals. Radix's owner, Premchard Girdhari, pleaded guilty in 1991 to mislabeling a veterinary drug and was fined $50,000. Since 1993, FDA inspectors have found numerous violations in drug manufacturing processes. After each inspection, Radix was notified of the violations, and the company promised to correct the deficiencies. However, the firm has failed to make necessary corrections, prompting the FDA to seek an injunction halting all manufacturing and distribution of drugs. Girdhari was unavailable for commentMonday.Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
