LVMH to resume talks with Gucci

Agencies
New York, Mar 5: French luxury goods maker LVMH on Thursday said it has sent a letter to rival Gucci Group NV seeking to resume talks to resolve their dispute over LVMH's efforts to gain representation on the Gucci board. The letter was sent in response to a Netherlands court's suggestion Wednesday that the two sides meet while the judges mull a bitter case involving Gucci's attempt to fend off what appeared to be a LVMH (LVMHY) takeover bid.

A New York-based spokesman for Gucci (GUC) said that the company had not yet received a letter but that it was open to serious discussions with LVMH. "The company's senior management is always prepared to sit down and engage in substantive and serious dialogue ...on the outstanding issues," the spokesman told Reuters.

LVMH Moet Hennesy Louis Vuitton, the largest luxury goods manufacturer in the world, in recent months acquired a 34 percent stake in the exclusive Italian fashion house.

On Wednesday, the court said it needed until April 22 to decide if Gucci actedproperly in issuing a "poison pill" share of its stock to employees in an attempt to dilute LVMH's ownership. The court suspended voting rights of both parties. In reaction, LVMH said it was withdrawing its bid to seek a representative on Gucci's board of directors and said it no longer saw a need for the extraordinary meeting of Gucci shareholders it had sought for March 23. Gucci's chairman, Domenico de Sole, said the move indicated LVMH understood its board nominee would not have the support of Gucci's independent shareholders. LVMH officials declined to release the text of the letter Thursday, but in a statement said "the letter responds to the desire of the Enterprise Chamber of the Amsterdam Court that the two sides get together and find their own solution." LVMH continued that it wished to "move forward in a spirit of cooperation."
