Mumbai, February 26: Exports of readymade garments from the country crossed the $5 billion mark in 1998. The total exports touched $5048.7 million as exports to the US have gone up by 4.35 per cent in dollar terms and 17.96 per cent in rupee terms. Simlarly, exports to Canada have increased by 9.03 per cent in dollar terms and 23 per cent in rupee terms, according to a ministry release.While exports to the European Union have shown a decline of 6.24 per cent in dollar terms, they have increased by 5.54 per cent in rupee terms.
Exports to non-quota countries have increased by 16.14 per cent in dollar terms and 31.72 per cent in rupee terms.
On the whole, exports have shown substantial improvement as compared with last year. While exports moved up by 1.49 per cent in dollar terms in 1997, they rose by 6.30 per cent in rupee terms.
In contrast, the exports have recorded a 3.81 per cent in dollar termms 1998, it has gone up by 17.29 per cent in rupee terms. Unit value realisation during 1998 has increased mmarginally from $3.77 in 1998 from $3.74. In 1997, the unit value realisation has gone down to $3.74 from $4.04.
