United Studios changes name

Our Bureau
Mumbai, Feb 26: United Studios Ltd will now be called USL Animation and Media Technologies Ltd as the company's new focus area will be special effects and 2D and 3D animation. "We are no longer just in the studio and post production rental business," USL managing director Noshir Desai said.

The company is keen to dominate the animation market as it has one of the most creative names in Asia--Ram Mohan. Advertising spend on animation programmes in the US is $1.5 billion. The US sub-contracts in excess of $200 million of work every year to Asia.

Recently, USL supplied cartoon animation to 20th Century Saban-Fox for Oliver Twist and has done tests for Rumplestilskin. The creative and writing team has developed concepts and detailed characters for eight new international series.

"Each of the international contracts are over $1 million and our order book is blocked for at least six months ahead of time," said Desai.

For special effects, USL has acquired Inferno, an advanced equipment, at an investment of nearly Rs 3 crore. Inferno is driven by a powerful computer called ONYX2.

In the last three months, USL has covered the major live events like the Lata Mangeshkar show and Femina Miss India contest.
