Mumbai, Feb 22: Telco chairman Ratan Tata has said that it will not be possible to hike the production target of 50,000 Indicas by the end of the next fiscal as vendors will not be able to cope with the demand.Faced with an overwhelming 115,000 bookings for its dream car, there were expectations of the company being able to raise its production target.
"Any rise in the production figures in dependent on the vendors being able to manufacture that many cars. At this point, I do not feel that the vendors will be able to produce more than 50,000 cars by the end of the next fiscal," Tata told The Financial Express. "We do not want a situation where increasing the number of cars being produced affects quality. This will lead to rejections, which is not acceptable," he added.
Earlier, responding to accolades from shareholders on the tremendous success of Indica, Tata said: "Not even in our wildest expectations did we expect the people of the country to respond in the manner they did."
On the commercial-vehicle front, Tata said that the company's share in the medium- and heavy-commercial vehicle segment had dropped and then recovered to 65 per cent, 2 per cent lower than last year. On the other hand, its share in the light-commercial vehicle segment was now 69 per cent, 5 per cent more than the previous year.
