India seen as major grain exporter by 2020

Mumbai: India could emerge as a major foodgrain exporter in 2020 with marketable surplus during the year expected to be nine million tonne, a study says. A feasibility report on "Modernisation of foodgrain handling and management in India", says that availability of cereal would be about 285.52 million tonne in 2020 against the consumption of 276.45 million tonne, leaving a marketable surplus of about 9 million tonne.Copyright © 1999 Indian Express Newspapers (Bombay) Ltd.
