Ahmedabad, Feb 14: The chief judicial magistrate, Bhuj, on Sunday rejected bail applications of executive director and deputy general manager of Ahmedabad-based Adani Exports, who were arrested by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), for evading customs duty of Rs 1.4 crore.The executive director Rajesh Adani and deputy general manager Harish Kumar Gupta were remanded in judicial custody till February 24. The two were arrested on Friday and were brought to Bhuj before the cjm on Saturday, DRI sources said.
Meanwhile, the deputy director of DRI bureau CM Sharma, when contacted, refused to divulge any details as investigation in the case was still on.
Opposing the bail applications of the Adani officials, the DRI submitted that on February 6 it seized 38,000 metric tonnes of coal at Kandla Port worth approximately Rs 7 crore imported by the Adani Exports.
It said 58,000 metric tonnes of coal was shipped from China for Adani Exports in September 1988 and it arrived at Kandla Port in earlyOctober.
For duty free clearance purposes, Adani Exports furnished before the customs authorities pre-dated shipping documents with the bills of entry filed in the case showing date of shipment as April 25, 1998, DRI said.
